Builder Gel + Nail Health - How long can a builder gel manicure last?

Updated: Apr 7

Firstly, there is a difference between how long can builder gel last? AND, how long should you leave it between each appointment?

Here are some examples of lasting builder gel! Can you spot the ones that have been left on too long??

Examples of how long builder gel can last
Builder Gel - Lasting Nails

As you can see builder gel can last quite some time!

This brings me to our first question: How long can builder gel last?

It can last beyond 4 weeks, depending on how well they have been maintained and looked after, I have known builder gel to last up to 7 weeks! This is NOT RECOMENDED! Leading us onto our next question below.

How long SHOULD you leave it between each appointment?

Ideally it is recommended to come every 3-4 weeks! Why?

Let's look into why we should keep up with regular maintenance appointments!

#1 - Nail structure changes as the builder gel grows out

As your nail grows the apex, that has been formed to add strength and support, moves along with it. This then weakens the nails leading to our next point.

#2 - Start to get wear and tear + breakages!

As mentioned above once your structure has been weakened this leads on to further damage. You may start to get some lifting, start seeing some chips and sadly your lovely nails could start breaking at the weaker area of your nails.

"If enhancements are not well maintained regularly, the grown-out product can put pressure on the natural nail underneath and can cause a weak structure, which is more prone to breaking and lifting." – Katy Barnes | Business, Experts Advice, Feature | Scratch Magazine

#3 - Damaging to your natural nail health

As the above mentions your nails start to break and it can cause damage on your natural nails as they are no longer supported or protected. Both you and your nail tech have worked hard at getting your nails to a healthy state, you now have lovely, natural + healthy nails with your perfect length! So why stop there?

#4 - Loss of time and money

Lastly, leaving it too long between appointments could take you right back to the beginning causing you to need more fixtures and even start all over again with your growth journey! This means you have now potentially waisted your time and money!

Let's not let any of the above happen!

Rather than let this happen let's carry on promoting the growth of healthy nails and book regular maintenance appointments with your tech! This way your nail tech can check the growth and nail health and make sure there are no issues that could potentially worsen due to less frequent appointments.
